Idea Playground

Creativity and innovation are much sought-after qualities of individuals and organizations, but existing creativity practises are not cohesively integrated with digital workflows or digital artefacts. In order to develop a digital system that supports all different stages of the creative process (gathering inspiration, generating ideas, and refining ideas), a set of design considerations was acquired. Besides studying existing systems this was done by analyzing different embodiments of creative processes to ensure high practical relevance. Based on these theoretical considerations Idea Playground was implemented. It supports diverse input sources, synchronous and asynchronous use, and freeform information structuring. In preliminary observations of actual use-cases different groups with varying dynamics and work styles were able to use and adapt the system to their individual creative processes.

The goals of this project are:

  • Analyzing the entire creative processes (gathering inspiration, generating ideas, and refining ideas) and their embodiments in different contexts.
  • Acquiring different design considerations to frame the requirements for a digital system that is able to support the entire creative process.
  • Developing a fully functional system based on these requirements.
  • Observe groups using this system in a preliminary study to gain additional insight in the topic and to provide further improvements to the system.
