Improving interaction on interactive surfaces using animation and other layout elements

This project focuses on the use of animation and other layout elements in interaction and interface design to improve usability of interactive surfaces. Many current touch-based interactive surfaces rely heavily on a trial-and-error approach for guiding users through the interaction process. We wish to harness the direct manipulability of highly visual displayed content and the close physical proximity between interactive content and users to facilitate such process. We believe through the use of animation user engagement and overall user experience would be increased, while through effective layout better focus direction can be achieved.

The goals of this project are:

  • Develop a framework for proximate interaction especially in assisting users through the interaction process

Explore the role of animation and other layout elements in facilitating interaction
