Collaborative maps on digital white boards

Achieving missions successfully requires high degrees of coordination and collaboration among police officers, especially in emergency situations. The current workflow often consists of a large amount of manual work with traditional media, including paper and powerpoint slides. By deploying a large digital white board with direct input, the power of automation could increase the work efficiency and enable close collaboration. For example, the application could provide the most up to date map information and locations of police placement. Together with another master’s student (Alexandra Ion), a map application for the Landespolizeikommando (state police command) on a large digital white board will be developed and evaluated. This project will investigate the potential automation in this context and its impact on the work efficiency and the situation awareness.

The goals of this project include the following:

  • Gather design requirement through observations and interviews on the workflow and the environment

  • Develop a map application that improves efficiency and maintains situation awareness for police missions

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the application and the impact of introducing this technology
